Amber Bearing Stone is an ore added by Thaumcraft 3. They drop a single Amber. When mined with Fortune, they drop up to 4 amber.
Amber Bearing Stone can be seen on the sides of mountains as well as further down the ground around level 45.
(As for highest levels found: In a Mystcraft Age made for quarrying, with tiled biomes of Extreme Hills and Mountainous Desert whose surface is Y=178, Amber Bearing Stone was observed on the Quarry walls in the highest layer of Stone, under the top 3-5 layers of dirt, sand and sandstone. As the land height of such a tiled Mystcraft Age is the average of the two biomes typical height, it remains to be tested if Amber Bearing Stone is found in actual stony mountains higher than 174 or so. At such an altitude in a quarry of those two biomes, the only minerals seen in the stone are Amber Bearing Stone and Apatite.)
Although Silk touch does yield an Amber Bearing Stone, it cannot be cooked in a furnace or otherwise made useful except by mining it with a pickaxe to produce Amber.
