"PetroGen" redirects here. For the block, see Petroleum Generator (Block).

Petroleum Generator (or PetroGen for short) is a mod which adds a Petroleum Generator to the game. This generator will produce EU directly from BuildCraft Fuel or Oil, which can be either pumped in as a BuildCraft liquid through Liquiducts or Waterproof Pipes or manually deposited using containers. Biofuel will not be burned by a Petroleum Generator. For that purpose, one can still use the Bio Generator to burn it instead. The focus of this mod is to make conversion of oil/fuel to EU a lossy process and to fix the scaling issues that come with using BC power directly.

Recently added was an IC2-based processing chain to turn raw materials from TrainCraft (Oil sands and Crude oil ore) into BuildCraft oil. This chain is only enabled if TrainCraft is installed.

Most conversion mods use coal as a conversion point between BC and IC2. Once you get to higher tier fuels you have a conversion ratio that gets out of control. For example, Fuel producing about 1.5 million EU using a combustion engine through a MJ to EU conversion block (last tested using MC1.4.2, BC3.1.8, IC1.108 and Transformers 1.6). As SirSengir, of Forestry/BuildCraft points out, using coal to build the ratio ignores the different scaling between the two mods' power systems.

The Petroleum Generator is a block added by the mod of the same name that allows for the conversion of Fuel from BuildCraft 3 into EU from IndustrialCraft2. It is a very lossy conversion, fuel only producing 300,000 EU per bucket, as fuel produces 600,000 MJ per bucket in a Combustion Engine. As conversion ratios typically sit at 2.5 EU = 1 MJ, one bucket of fuel burned in a Combustion Engine and then turned to EU with the Power Converters mod would provide about 1.5 million EU. Oil can also be burned for 30,000 EU (conserving the 10:1 fuel:oil ratio of BuildCraft) but Biomass and Biofuel must be burned in a Bio Generator instead of this.

If GregTech 4 is installed, this machine is mostly made obsolete by GregTech's Diesel Generator, which produces 28% more EU. This machine is also made obsolete by various blocks from Power Converters.
